Private languages and private theorists

Simon Blackburn objects that Wittgenstein's private language argument overlooks the possibility that a private linguist can equip himself with a criterion of correctness by confirming generalizations about the patterns in which his private sensations occur. Crispin Wright responds that appropriate generalizations would be too few to be interesting. But I show that Wright's calculations are upset by his failure to appreciate both the richness of the data and the range of theories that would be available to the private linguist

Multi-k magnetic structures in USb_{0.9}Te_{0.1} and UAs_{0.8}Se_{0.2} observed via resonant x-ray scattering at the U M4 edge

Experiments with resonant photons at the U M4 edge have been performed on a sample of USb_{0.9}Te_{0.1}, which has an incommensurate magnetic structure with k = 0.596(2) reciprocal lattice units. The reflections of the form , as observed previously in a commensurate k = 1/2 system [N. Bernhoeft et al., Phys. Rev. B 69 174415 (2004)] are observed, removing any doubt that these occur because of multiple scattering or high-order contamination of the incident photon beam. They are clearly connected with the presence of a 3k configuration. Measurements of the reflections from the sample UAs_{0.8}Se_{0.2} in a magnetic field show that the transition at T* ~ 50 K is between a low-temperature 2k and high-temperature 3k state and that this transition is sensitive to an applied magnetic field. These experiments stress the need for quantitative theory to explain the intensities of these reflections.Comment: submitted to Phys. Rev.

Virtual EQ – the talent differentiator in 2020?

In an increasingly competitive, globalised world, knowledge-intensive industries/ services are seen as engines for success. Key to this marketplace is a growing army of ‘talent’ i.e. skilled and dedicated knowledge workers. These knowledge workers engage in non-routine problem solving through combining convergent, divergent and creative thinking across organizational and company boundaries - a process often facilitated though the internet and social media, consequently forming networks of expertise. For knowledge workers, sharing their learning with others through communities of practice embedded in new information media becomes an important element of their personal identity and the creation of their individual brand or e-social reputation. Part of the new knowledge/skills needed for this process becomes not only emotional intelligence (being attuned to the emotional needs of others) but being able to do this within and through new media, thus the emergence of virtual emotional intelligence (EQ). Our views of current research found that HRD practitioners in 2020 might need to consider Virtual EQ as part of their talent portfolio. However it seems that new technology has created strategies for capturing and managing knowledge that are readily duplicated and that a talent differentiator in 2020 might simply be the ability and willingness to learn

Epistemic Logic with Partial Dependency Operator

In this paper, we introduce $\textit{partial}$ dependency modality $\mathcal{D}$ into epistemic logic so as to reason about $\textit{partial}$ dependency relationship in Kripke models. The resulted dependence epistemic logic possesses decent expressivity and beautiful properties. Several interesting examples are provided, which highlight this logic's practical usage. The logic's bisimulation is then discussed, and we give a sound and strongly complete axiomatization for a sub-language of the logic

Low energy electron scattering from DNA and RNA bases: shape resonances and radiation damage

Calculations are carried out to determine elastic scattering cross sections and resonance energies for low energy electron impact on uracil and on each of the DNA bases (thymine, cytosine, adenine, guanine), for isolated molecules in their equilibrium geometry. Our calculations are compared with available theory and experiment. We also attempt to correlate this information with experimental dissociation patterns through an analysis of the temporary anion structures that are formed by electron capture in shape resonances.Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, submitted to J. The virtuous entrepreneur: new ventures and human flourishing

Entrepreneurship research in recent years has expanded to include the ethical dimension of new venture creation and various normative frameworks have been applied to the entrepreneurship role. Despite this, entrepreneurship is still widely viewed as a business phenomenon which bases its claim to be a key contributor to social good on economic grounds only. In this paper, the social good against which entrepreneurship success is measured is defined in terms of a broader notion of human flourishing derived from virtue ethics theory. Virtue ethics as a moral theory emphasises positive traits of character shown by habitual action which fit those who have them to lead good lives in terms of a particular notion of professional excellence. In this paper, the writers argue, with reference to virtue ethics, that new measures of success are needed for entrepreneurship, which take into account the key professional concerns, beliefs and features of entrepreneurship. The roles and responsibilities of entrepreneurs enable them to contribute to society in ways that go beyond economic achievements, thus achieving the broad goal of entrepreneurship, human empowerment through opportune innovation, risk-taking and creativity. Having described these specific roles and responsibilities and how they inform the development of a regulative ideal which influences moral purpose and action, the paper goes on to explore the question: what traits of character constitute the entrepreneur who will be well equipped to achieve success as defined? A range of traits which might contribute to entrepreneurial success such as creativity, courage and toughness are suggested and described. The entrepreneur who has these attributes will be an excellent practitioner: one who embodies qualities of character which contribute to the achievement of the proper goals of entrepreneurship

A hilbert-style axiomatisation for equational hybrid logic

This paper introduces an axiomatisation for equational hybrid logic based on previous axiomatizations and natural deduction systems for propositional and first-order hybrid logic.
